Suspect sustained critical injuries, Del Norte deputy 'doing really well'

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - A Del Norte sheriff's deputy was in pursuit of a man who fled from a traffic stop, when the situation turned into an exchange of gunfire, leaving both shooters injured, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP).

According to Del Norte Undersheriff Bill Stevens, officers attempted a traffic stop on a car occupied by a man and woman who fled on a short foot pursuit.

According to CHP Lt. Ryan Ham, a woman was apprehended, arrested and later released. The male suspect was later identified as Anthony Hamilton.

Officials said a Del Norte sheriff deputy and Crescent City police officer began assisting in the search for Hamilton, when officers said a gun battle ensued.

The shooting occurred on Washington Boulevard and Lafayette Way around 10 a.m. Thursday, June 29, according to officials.

The deputy who sustained gunshot wounds is doing well and has been released from the hospital, according to Stevens. His identity is not being released at this time.

Officials said Hamilton was flown out of the area to receive treatment for critical injuries.

The incident is being investigated by the CHP's Northern Division.
