HSU's Ja'Quan Gardner collects AFCA All-America Honors
ARCATA, Calif. - Humboldt State University (HSU) senior running back Ja'Quan Gardner was named an American Football Coaches Association All-America Second Team selection on Wednesday.
"It's a great way to cap an outstanding career," said HSU Head Coach Rob Smith. "He not only leaves Humboldt as the top running back to play here, but he also leaves as the top running back to play in the GNAC. He is very deserving of this award."
The Ceres, Calif., native led the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in rushing during the 2017 campaign, and he helped guide the Jacks to an 8-2 record. Gardner, a Harlon Hill Trophy national finalist, rushed for 1,259 yards and 19 touchdowns on 203 carries. He broke the conference records for career rushing yards (5,426), touchdowns (70) and attempts (878).
HSU's all-time rushing leader has collected a number of postseason honors including the GNAC's Offensive Player of the Year and unanimous First Team All-GNAC awards and a D2CCA All-Region nod. Gardner was a two-time conference Offensive Player of the Week and earned preseason All-America accolades from D2Football.com and Lindy's.
Gardner was also tabbed an AFCA All-America First Team selection following the 2015 season.
The AFCA All-America Teams are nominated by coaches and voted on by a national selection committee.
