Man drowns after canoe flips on Sacramento River
REDDING, Calif. - One man drowned in the Sacramento River in Redding after the canoe he was riding in with another man flipped in the water.
Search and rescue crews were called around 2:30 p.m. to look for two men lost in the water just north of the John F Reginado Boat Launch below the South Bonnyview Bridge.
A helicopter searched from the sky while Shasta County Sheriff's boats took to the water.
One of the men was pulled from the river by a drift boat and brought to the boat launch, but his companion, an unidentified man wasn't recovered.
Shasta County Sheriff's Deputy Gary VanDyne says it's believed the helicopter spotted the man.
"At one point we believe we saw the individual but he was too far under water to recover and that's why the dive team has been called out," VanDyne said.
VanDyne says the men didn't have safety vests.
"I talked to the individual that was recovered, he said this gentleman does not know how to swim and was not wearing a life jacket," he said. "If the gentleman did have a life jacket on, he'd probably be with us today."
