Witness describes deadly shooting in Eureka alley
EUREKA, Calif. - According to the Eureka Police Department, a security guard shot and killed a man Tuesday night after the man confronted the guard in an alley and attempted to stab the guard.
Officials said officers with the Eureka Police Department responded to the alley behind the Shell Gas Station in the 1300 block of 5th Street around 8:14 p.m. for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived on scene they found a man down in the alley with a gunshot wound to his torso.
Mickey Ainsworth, who lives in the complex where the shooting happened, described the scene.
"Someone yelled, 'Get back! Back up! Get back!' So I pulled up my shade and I looked out my window, and I saw this guy with a knife, trying to stab the security guard who had the window of his car rolled down, Ainsworth described. "He was lunging at the window with the knife. And the security guard was pulling back a little bit like this. And he said 'Get back! Get back!' And the guy didn't get back, and I heard, 'Pop! Pop!".
Officers said the man was unresponsive and medical personnel were ordered to the scene. The man was transported to the hospital where he died.
Police said the shooter was identified as a uniformed on-duty armed security guard for a local security company. There were multiple witnesses to the incident, all of which cooperated with investigators and provided consistent statements.
Police said the investigation suggests that the security guard was confronted by the man in the alley as the guard was trying to exit his vehicle. Police said a confrontation took place and the man brandished a knife and attempted to stab the security guard. The security guard fired his weapon, ending the assault.
Neither the suspect or the security guard have been identified and no arrests have been made at this point. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Bise at 707-441-4109.
