Alleged DUI driver arrested for fatal hit-and-run

OROVILLE, Calif. - Update 11:00 a.m.: The Butte County Coroners Office has identified the victim as Michael Cesspooch, 53, of Marysville.

An alleged DUI driver was arrested in Oroville after a fatal hit-and-run crash and police chase.

Oroville police arrested Anthony Abuanbar, 37 of Oroville, on a series of charges including involuntary vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence of drugs/and or alcohol.

The collision happened around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 2100 block of Feather River Blvd. An Oroville police officer was on the scene moments after the deadly crash.

According to a news release from Oroville Police Department, Officer Khan was on Feather River Blvd., approaching Oro Dam Blvd., when he saw a white Ford F-150 pickup pull off to the right side of the road, causing a large plume of dust.

As Officer Khan approached the pickup, there was a man lying on the right shoulder of the road. Witnesses told the officer the pickup had hit the bicyclist, then stopped to pull the bicycle from under his truck before leaving the scene.

When the officer tried to pull over the pickup truck, the driver led him on a pursuit southbound on Highway 70, to Pacific Heights Road, reaching speeds over 70 miles per hour. The pursuit ended in the area of Pacific Heights Road and Hilgers Road where Abuanbar was taken into custody.

Police said Cesspooch was pronounced dead at the scene.

Feather River Blvd. was closed for about two hours as officers processed the crime scene.

Abuanbar was booked into the Butte County Jail on charges including involuntary vehicular manslaughter, evading a Peace Officer, hit and run causing great bodily injury, driving under the influence of drugs/and or alcohol causing great bodily injury, and hit and run. Abuanbar's bail was set at $270,000.
