The Butte County Sheriff's office is investigating the death of a hiker after he went missing from his campsite and was later found in the Fall River.

According to officials, Christopher McClanahan, 44, of Paradise, was with a friend Saturday night camping on the Fall River, above Feather Falls, when his friend woke up and noticed McClanahan was not there.

Officials said McClanahan's friend searched the area for a couple hours and was unable to find him. He then made his way back to the road to contact the Butte County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies responded and requested assistance from the Butte County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Team.

Officials said three K9 teams and ten searchers responded and as they were searching, they were approached by a hiker who said he had seen a body in the Fall River, which was about a quarter mile above Feather Falls.

The cause of McClanahan's death remains under investigation.
