Chico skatepark breaks ground on improvements

CHICO, Calif. - The Chico Area Recreation and Park District held a ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the groundbreaking for renovations to the Chico skatepark.

For two years, they've partnered with local nonprofit organization Chico Skatepark Solutions to plan and raise funds for the renovations.

So far, Chico Skatepark Solutions has raised $113,000. Current plans for the park include enlarging the bowl into the grass area and adding more challenging, but safe, elements.

"We're so thrilled about today, I mean this is unbelievable," said Chico Skatepark Solutions President Scott Bailey. "It's two years in the making and when we started we didn't even know if it was possible. Paradise, they had some good folks there and they worked for 10 years to try to get a skatepark and finally walked away without it happening, so when we started we thought we'd go all out for six months and see if something positive could happen."

At the end, Bailey said a total of $400,000 will go into these skatepark renovations.

The project is expected to be complete in the spring of 2018.
