One killed in head-on crash on Highway 99 north of Chico

Update 10:30 p.m.:

California Highway Patrol has finished their investigation on scene and has opened up lanes to traffic on Highway 99.

Update 5:35 p.m.:

Highway Patrol officers say traffic will be backed up for at least a couple of hours after a 77-year-old from man from Colfax was killed in a crash north of Chico on Highway 99.

CAL FIRE Engineers Cody McNamara, 28, of Anderson and Greg Babcock, 30, of Redding, were taken to Enloe Medical Center and are listed in stable condition.

A CHP Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) has been called to the scene from Sacramento and the cars will remain in the roadway until they have time to investigate. Officers are asking people to avoid the area if possible.

Update 3:15 p.m.:

One person is dead after a head-on crash between a Shasta County Cal Fire utility truck and another vehicle around 2:14 p.m. Friday on Highway 99, just south of Anita Road.

Officials said the Cal Fire truck was heading north and a Geo Prizm was traveling south when they collided. The California Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation shows that the elderly man driving the Prizm drifted off onto the right hand shoulder, ran over a sign, over corrected, went through the median, and then drove into the northbound lane, colliding head-on with the Cal Fire truck.

Officials said the elderly man driving the Geo Prizm died on scene and the two people in the Cal Fire truck were transported with minor and moderate injuries.

Traffic is currently backed up about a mile in both directions. One-way traffic control is in effect.

Original Article 3:00 p.m.:

According to Caltrans, northbound Highway 99 at Anita Road, about five miles north of Chico, is closed due to a multi-vehicle crash.

Officials said there is no estimated time of when the lanes will be reopened.

Traffic is being diverted onto Anita Road, our reporter on the way says traffic is currently backed up to Garden Brook Drive.
