A head-on collision killed a 57 year-old woman and caused major injuries to another person on SR-70, in the Yuba-Sutter area, Friday night.

According to the California Highway Patrol, they got a call around 4:20 p.m. and units from the Marysville Fire Department, Yuba County Sheriff's Department, Cal Trans and Bi-County Ambulance all responded.

According to the CHP, Joseph Watson, 37, was driving his 1996 Ford Explorer southbound on SR-70, when he made an unsafe turn across the center line, directly in the path of a 1998 Toyota Corolla in the opposite lane.

Watson's Ford hit the Toyota head-on. Both vehicles blocked both lanes of SR-70.

Watson was taken to Rideout Memorial Hospital and the CHP says drugs or alcohol were not believed to be a factor.

The preliminary investigation indicates Watson may have been distracted.

The name of the woman who died is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.
