Peet's Coffee closes for the holiday, but won't be reopening
CHICO, Calif. - Locals who tried to grab a cup of joe at Peet's Coffee in Downtown Chico on Christmas were greeted with a sign at the door that said, "This location is now closed."
But it's not just for Christmas. The chain restaurant is closed for good as of December 25. Its last day in business was Christmas Eve.
KRCR News Channel 7's Jerry Olenyn first reported the move back in September. Then, the building's owner, David Halimi said Cal Java would be taking over the space on West 2nd and Main Street at the beginning of 2018.
Halimi said he was given no reason why Peet's decided not to renew its lease.
"I didn't even know that, I was about ready to try [to go in,] thinking that they were open for Christmas and now they're never gonna be here again?" said Daniel, a local who frequents Downtown Chico. "I'm going to have to go and find a different coffee establishment and I'm not a Starbucks man."
Initially, the Emeryville based company was supposed to be out in November, but asked for a one-month extension on the lease.
Cal Java is a Chico based coffee shop with two current locations on East Avenue and Mangrove Avenue.
