CHICO, Calif. - Chico police said two people have been arrested and several more people of interest have been detained after a shooting on the Esplanade.

Police said around 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, the Chico Police Department received several 911 calls about an active shooter at the shopping center on the corner of Cohasset Road and the Esplanade. As officers were responding they received reports that the suspect were running from the area and gunshots were continuing.

Once officers arrived on scene, multiple bullet casings were found and witnesses told police the suspects ran northbound toward the Esplanade.

"It's very concerning for us," said Deputy Chief Matt Madden. "I mean anytime we receive multiple 911 calls of shots being fired in the city, in the middle of the day is a very concerning situation for the police department."

As police were checking the area they found a vehicle leaving the Safari Inn Motel with suspects inside that fit the descriptions of the suspects seen at the shooting. The vehicle failed to stop when police attempted to pull it over and a pursuit began.

Police said the pursuit went down Mandalay Court, a cul-de-sac north of E. Lassen Avenue. A Lieutenant with the Chico Police Department feared that the suspects' vehicle would crash into a home so he used his vehicle to stop the suspects' vehicle. At this point, the suspects got out of the car and a short foot pursuit ensued.

Police were able to arrest the two suspects in the vehicle and they are now in custody. Police added they have several other people of interest detained as they work to figure out what happened.

No victims from the shooting have been located at this time but witnesses said they saw a Hispanic man running from the area with what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the abdomen.

The Chico Police Department Detective Bureau, the TARGET team, the Butte County Sheriff's Office, and the California Highway Patrol are all working on this incident. Police added it is too early to say if the shooting was gang related.
