First Shasta County baby arrives hours after the new year
REDDING, Calif. - The first Shasta County baby was born at Mercy Medical Center in Redding hours after the new year.
Skylar Kay, daughter and first child of Amanda Hagerman and Nick Brown of Hayfork was born at 3:41 a.m., Monday.
The hospital said that Skylar weighed in at 8.2 pounds and is 20-inches long.
Amanda was in labor since 10:00 a.m. Sunday, December 31, and ended up having to go through an emergency C section January 1. Amanda said she never expected to be a parent, and especially didn't think she'd be ringing in the new year as the mother of such a beautiful baby girl.
"I was told my due date was (December) 23 but then they changed it to the first and she ended up coming on the first," Amanda said.
"She came out and they held her up over the curtain and her eyes were open, like instantly, and they were a super bright blue and I was like, wow, that's pretty impressive," Nick elaborated as both he and Amanda have blue eyes as well.
Not even a day old, Skylar is already taking after her parents.
"She has my nose and my chin and my lips. I was told by my dad when I was born we were good babies, calm and she seems to be the same way," Amanda said.
But that's not all she and her daughter will share.
"We're both going to be winter babies," Amanda explains as her birthday is December 1.
Sharing a birthday will be part of many traditions to come, but for now, mom and dad are focused on the celebration of having a happy, healthy, baby girl.
Amanda and Nick said the medical staff at Mercy couldn't have been more attentive and caring through this intimate life event.
