Felon lands himself in hospital after self-inflicted gunshot wound

A report of gunshot victims prompted authorities to respond to a home in South Redding Tuesday morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. in the 6600 block of Southgate Drive in South Redding.

When they got there, police found Waylon John Rocha, 25, of Redding, and Bailey Whitaker, 24, of Redding, with gunshot wounds. Rocha was injured in the head; Whitaker in the torso area.

Officials said Rocha originally told officers that two unknown suspects came into the garage and shot them before running off, but officers couldn't find any suspects in the area and saw no suspicious activity on surveillance video.

Rocha and Whitaker were hospitalized, where they were interviewed again. Police said Rocha confessed to shooting himself and told officers that a round had accidentally hit Whitaker. They said a handgun and additional evidence at the home corroborated Rocha's new story.

Whitaker suffered minor injuries and was released from the hospital. Police said Rocha was arrested for being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, negligent discharge of a firearm, and violation of post-release community supervision. He was booked into the Shasta County Jail.
