Passenger killed in DUI crash; driver arrested
REDDING, Calif. - One person was killed, two others were hurt, and a driver is facing a murder charge after a crash Saturday night.
It happened at 8 p.m. at the intersection of Hartnell Avenue and Argyle Road.
According to police, a Subaru Impreza driven by Zachary Gleason, 23, of Central Point, Oregon was traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on Hartnell when Gleason lost control, and the vehicle struck a utility pole.
A passenger, Natalie Slivka, 20, of Redding, suffered grave injuries, and was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where she later died.
Michael Filomeo, 22, of Redding, and Mayra Lopez, 21, of Redding, were also hurt in the crash. Filomeo had abrasions and declined medical treatment. Lopez was taken to Mercy for abrasions and a complaint of pain.
Gleason, meanwhile, attempted to flee the scene, according to police. They found him running toward Highway 44. He was contacted and admitted to drinking earlier in the day, and was arrested on charges of second-degree murder, gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol causing injury, and driving with a BAC above .08 causing injury.
According to police, Gleason had a prior DUI arrest in 2013.
