Police chase ends in stolen vehicle, drug arrest

REDDING, Calif. - A suspect led Redding police and the California Highway Patrol on an early morning chase through Redding Friday after he was pulled over in a stolen vehicle.

Redding Police Officer Tom Landreth was driving through Redding at approximately 1 a.m. with a "LoJack device," which allows officers to detect and track aftermarket stolen vehicles.

Police said he detected a stolen vehicle nearby and found it traveling westbound on Lake Blvd. near Market Street, being driven by Shawn Cunningham, 42 of Klamath Falls, Oregon.

When Landreth tried to pull Cunningham over, he took off and a police pursuit ensued.

Cunningham led police through Lake Blvd. with speeds nearing 80 miles per hour. He turned onto Clay Street, Buckeye Terrace and Dogwood Lane, where he drove down a steep ravine and got stuck in dense brush.

Police said a CHP helicopter responded and officers set up a perimeter around him. He was arrested and booked into Shasta County Jail for possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance (heroin), evading and resisting arrest.

The Redding Fire Department also responded to the scene as a preventative measure because of dry vegetation but no fire broke out.
