Redding JCPenney among list of stores likely to close

JCPenney plans to shutter as many as 140 stores in the first half of the year, the latest traditional retailer to announce closings.

REDDING, Calif. - After announcing on February 24, 2017 that 140 JCPenney stores would be closing, new details on which stores could close have been revealed.

In the February press release the company said the stores most likely to close either require a "significant capital investment" or have below-average sales.

JCPenney CEO Marvin Ellison said, "We understand that closing stores will impact the lives of many hard working associates, which is why we have decided to initiate a voluntary early retirement program for approximately 6,000, eligible associates."

A list of closing locations will be officially revealed later this month. Morningstar Credit Ratings published a report Wednesday listing 39 stores most likely to close based on sales data:
