Shasta County graduates celebrated for diverse endeavors

Graduating Shasta County high school seniors were honored at a signing day Wednesday at the Cascade Theater in Redding.

This wasn't a typical sports signing day. The event celebrated the diverse options after high school of higher education and beginning careers.

The students each introduced themselves and were cheered by the crowd on their next endeavor.

Some students have plans to go into the military, train for CAL FIRE or enter cosmetology school, while others announced plans to attend University of California schools. One girl announced at the event she is headed to Stanford University, while Savannah Feagin of Shasta High will attend West Point, two of the nation's most prestigious colleges.

Drew Johns will graduate from Enterprise High School in a few weeks. He has plans to attend M.I.T. and study Mechanical Engineering with a specialty in Aerospace Engineering.

"You know, it really means a lot and really nothing against athletes because they too need their signing day and their time to share with the community and their family and friends 'hey I'm going to do this in life'," Johns said. "But, realistically we are the nerds. I got called earlier today 'you're just going to your nerd convention' well, the nerds need to be able to have their moment, too."

He said he hopes to graduate from M.I.T. and come back to his home town and do whatever he can to make Shasta County even a little bit better.

Shasta County College and Career Signing Day was presented by Reach Higher Shasta and sponsored by College Options, Redding Chamber of Commerce, Shasta Builders Exchange and the Economic Development Corporation of Shasta County.
