Man rescued by deputies, suspect caught after nearly escaping custody
ALBION, Calif. - When responding to reports of shots fired and a burglary in progress in Mendocino County, a man was severely injured, a home burning and the suspect nearly escaped custody, according to officials.
The Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) said they responded to a property on the 27,000 block of Albion Ridge Road in Albion, Calif.
When they arrived, deputies said they found a structure engulfed by fire and a man who was majorly injured. According to MCSO, they carried the man to safety. The 73-year-old had reportedly sustained a major injury to his head after being struck with a blunt object.
According to authorities, deputies found the man suspected of setting the fire, Abel Sommer, nearby. Deputies said Sommer committed the crimes with his children with him.
Then after transporting Sommer to the Mendocino Coast Hospital, deputies said he broke free from his restraints and fled in an attempt to escape. With the help of Fort Bragg officers, deputies said they located Sommer minutes later after he broke out of a window while trying to escape.
Sommer was then transported to the Mendocino County Jail where he’s being held on $100,000 bail, according to officials.
