Chico wins Almond Bowl, Shasta dominates River Bowl
REDDING, Calif. - Shasta High School and Chico High School each posted impressive wins over archrivals in high school football action, highlighted on KRCR News Channel 7's Xtra Point.
The Shasta Wolves rise to Northstate power continued with a dominant 47-0 River Bowl win over crosstown rival Enterprise. The Wolves, (7-1, 3-0), are now alone atop the Eastern Athletic League after claiming their third straight win in the 25th meeting between the Redding schools. Enterprise falls to 3-5 and 0-3 in league play.
Shasta travels to Pleasant Valley next Friday night.
The Vikings lost their first league game of the season in the Almond Bowl, 23-3 to Chico.
Chico's defense kept the league's best passing offense out of the end zone, and behind the running of Kavon Samuels, the Panthers scored in each quarter as they improved to 2-1 in the league, 5-3 overall.
Chico visits Foothill in Palo Cedro next Friday night. Foothill, PV and Chico are tied for second in the EAL, a half game behind unbeaten Shasta.
Wins by West Valley and Anderson set up a Northern League showdown next week. The Eagles, (4-4, 4-0) won their fourth straight with a resounding 40-0 shutout of Corning. The Cardinals came in playing well, but fall to 5-3 and 2-2 in league.
Former Xtra Point Player of the Week Dylan Moore rushed for two first half touchdowns and was on the receiving end of an Alex Hight pass for another as West Valley built a big early lead. Hight also hooked up with Devin Lowe for a 65 yard touchdown reception on the last play of the opening half.
Next Friday night West Valley plays an Anderson team featuring one of the Northstate's most dominant lines, both offensive and defensive.
Scoring with machine-like efficiency on their first possession, the Cubs never trailed against Lassen in the 37-13 win at Anderson. Behind the rugged running of junior Parker Phillips, Anderson scored on their first two possessions.
Defensively, they kept pressure on the interior and quarterback Caleb Clements, intercepted by senior David Yates, who returned it deep into Wolves territory to set up a first quarter score.
Anchoring the Cubs up front is 6-5, 255 pound senior Jarrett Kingston, who has verbally committed to play football at Washington State University next year.
Anderson has reeled off seven straight wins since their 30-18 loss at Shasta in the season opener.
Elsewhere, Yreka, (3-6, 1-4), claimed their first Northern League win, 39-19 over Central Valley, (0-8, 0-4).
Princeton, (6-2, 4-1), blanked Mercy 48-0. The Warriors fall to 2-6 and 2-3.
Weed, (6-2, 4-2), outscored Butte Valley, 52-36. The Bulldogs, (4-4, 3-3), had their three game win streak snapped.
Durham, (8-0, 3-0), remains unbeaten, topping Trinity 48-12. The Wolves, (6-1, 2-1), lost for the first time this season. They host the Mid-Valley League's other remaining unbeaten team, East Nicolaus, next Friday.
The Big Valley Cardinals, (7-0, 5-0), dumped Redding Christian in 8-Man North play, 60-6. The Lions, (5-3, 5-1), five game win streak was snapped by the Cardinals, who have outscored their opponents 348-36 this season.
Biggs, (6-2, 3-1), topped Maxwell, 3-5, 1-2), in Mountain Valley League play, 41-12.
Hayfork, (5-3, 3-3), snapped a three game losing streak, topping Dunsmuir, 54-6. It was the Tigers', (1-7, 0-6), sixth straight loss.
Sutter, (7-1, 3-0), rolled on homecoming, 49-14 over Las Plumas, (4-4, 0-3).
Quincy, (5-3, 3-1), in a game played at Feather River College, ran past Burney, (2-6, 1-3), in Mountain Valley League play, 55-6.
Winters, (5-2, 1-0), outscored Willows, (1-8, 0-3), in Sacramento Valley League play, 47-20.
Fall Rivers, (6-2, 2-0), edged Modoc, (4-4, 1-1), in Shasta Cascade League play, 8-7.
Orland, (4-4, 3-0), won their fourth straight, 43-26 over Oroville, (2-6, 1-2).
Gridley, (6-2, 2-1), dominated Wheatland, (0-8, 0-3), in Butte View League play, 60-6.
In Eastern Athletic League action, Foothill, (5-3, 2-1), posted a 42-29 win at Paradise, (2-6, 0-3).
The East Nicolaus Spartans remain unbeaten, crushing Hamilton in Mid-Valley League play, 52-0.
Etna, (4-4, 1-2), spoiled homecoming for the Shasta Wolves, (1-8, 0-3), in Shasta Cascade League action, 16-8 in Mt. Shasta.
In Tulelake, the Honkers, (4-4, 2-3), topped Happy Camp, (2-7, 2-5), in 8-Man North play, 31-14.
