REDDING, Calif. - The first Friday night of October featured impressive league-opening wins for Shasta and Pleasant Valley, with West Valley, Foothill, Anderson, University Prep and Redding Christian posting highlighted victories on Xtra Point.

In the marquee game of the night, the Shasta Wolves, (5-1, 1-0), expected a shootout against DII Eastern rivals Chico. The Panthers, (3-2, 0-1), couldn't match the Wolves overall speed in the first half, as Shasta's Seth Park scored on runs of 15 and 30 yards. Park also caught a pair of TD passes in the 33-21 Shasta win.

Defending state champions Pleasant Valley, (2-4, 1-0), made a statement with a 35-14 win at home over Paradise, (2-4, 0-1). Caleb Cooley opened the game with an 86 yard kickoff return, and Quiane Rhodes rushed for a pair of touchdowns for the Vikings.

In another key Northern league game, West Valley, (2-4, 2-0), continued their impressive rebound from a slow start this season, holding off Red Bluff, (3-4, 2-1), in a game played at Shasta College. Dylan Moore, a former Xtra Point Player of the Week, finished with 260 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

In the Eastern League, Foothill, (4-2, 2-0), rallied for the 14-13 home win over Enterprise, (3-3, 0-2). The Hornets scored first on a Leslie Cummings to Brock Fischer touchdown pass. Sawyer Hall's short touchdown a few minutes later tied the game at 7-7.

Jayden Gordon's third-quarter touchdown pass to Matthew Darnall proved to be the difference for the Cougars. Enterprise's Ryder O'Banion kicked a pair of field goals in the loss.

Anderson, (5-1, 2-0), won their fifth straight game since a season-opening loss to Shasta, 50-25 over Central Valley, (0-6, 0-2).

In a Division IV Shasta Cascade opener, University Prep, (4-3, 1-0), outlasted gutsy Mt. Shasta, (1-6, 0-1), 30-26 in Redding.

In 8-man play, the Redding Christian Lions, (4-2, 4-0), continued to roll in North League play, scoring on their opening drive and never being threatened by Happy Camp, (2-5, 2-3), in Palo Cedro. Austin Larson rushed for three touchdowns and passed for two in the Lions win.

In 8-man North play, Tulelake shut out Dunsmuir 47-0, Butte Valley tripped Hayfork, 52-22 and Big Valley raced past Weed 61-6.

In 8-man South play, Los Molinos posted an impressive 78-20 win at home over Westwood.

Bryce Scott rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns as the Biggs Wolverines downed Portola 33-0 in Mountain Valley play. Biggs features this week's Xtra Point Mega Star Financial Player of the Week, Brian Caro.

Trinity stayed unbeaten with the 44-42 win over Hamilton. Sutter blanked Oroville 59-0. Gridley edged Las Plumas 19-18.

The Lassen Grizzlies topped Yreka 30-14.

Orland ran past Wheatland 62-6.
