Red Bluff edges Lassen, as Corning, Redding Christian roll in league openers

REDDING, Calif. - Red Bluff, Corning, and Redding Christian all posted impressive league opening wins, Friday night.

The Red Bluff Spartans, (2-3), forced to host homecoming at Shasta High School due to issues with their own stadium, pulled out a thriller over the defending DIII Northern League champion Lassen Grizzlies, (2-3), 39-36.

Corning, behind another impressive rushing game from Curtis McCoy, never trailed in their DIII Northern League opening win at Central Valley. The Cardinals improved to 4-1, while the Falcons dropped to 0-4.

In the Battle of the Axe, Orland, (1-4), posted their first win, 48-6 over Willows, (2-3), their ninth straight victory in the rivalry.

In DVI North 8-man action, Redding Christian's Brian Rogers returned a kick 73 yards for a score just before the end of the first half, propelling the Lions, (2-2), to a league-opening 41-18 win over Weed, (3-1). Lions quarterback Austin Larson rushed for three touchdowns.

Elsewhere, visiting Napa, (2-3), stunned Pleasant Valley, (1-4), 14-10, the defending state champion Vikings third straight loss. University Prep's homecoming was spoiled as the Panthers, (3-2), fell to the Pierce Bears, (4-1), 34-7 in Redding.

In other games: Happy Camp, (2-3), topped Butte Valley, (1-3), 50-36. Hayfork, (4-0), beat Tulelake, (2-3), 26-14. Foothill, (3-2), won at Clovis East, (0-5), 27-24.

The Greenville Indians, (4-1), trounced Westwood, (0-5), 54-16. Trinity's Marcus Williamson rushed for 128 yards in the Wolves, (3-0), 48-6 win over Hoopa Valley, (1-4).

The Hamilton Braves, (3-1), had a memorable 76-31 homecoming win over the WSCA Wolves, (4-1).

In a DVI North opener, Big Valley, (4-0), trounced Dunsmuir, (1-3), 65-0 in Bieber.

Etna, (3-1), topped Maxwell, (2-3), 35-16 in Etna.

In DIII Northern play, Dylan Moore's 311 yards and three touchdowns lifted West Valley, (1-4), with an impressive win at Yreka, (2-3).

At Harrison Stadium in Oroville, the Tigers, (0-4), fell to the visiting Anderson Cubs, (3-1), 42-7.

Gridley, (3-1), outscored Paradise, (2-2), 50-33.

Chester's Volcanoes, (3-1), topped the Biggs Wolverines, (3-2), 37-20.

Durham, (4-0), reported a 2-0 win over Mt. Shasta, (1-4).

Xtra Point also included segments on the Player of the Week, Red Bluff High School's Marshal Brose, as well as a story about former Butte College and Hamilton High School player Rigoberto Sanchez. The 23-year-old from Chico is now the starting punter for the Indianapolis Colts of the NFL. He enters this week as the league's number two punter with a 46.5-yard average.
