Arcata woman killed while riding bicycle in Siskiyou County

SISKIYOU COUNTY, Calif. - According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), an Arcata woman was killed Saturday while riding her bike on Sawyers Bar Road in Siskiyou County.

The Siskiyou County Coroners Office identified the woman as Jennifer Mason, 61.

Officials said Mason was a member of a bicycle club and was riding her bicycle with a group of other bicyclists on Sawyers Bar Road, approximately 6.4 miles east of Salmon River Road. Officials said Mason was riding down a downgrade when her bicycle drifted to the right and off the road on a steep hillside.

Mason struck a large tree which resulted in major head trauma and her death. Officials said at the time of the collision, Mason was wearing a bicycle helmet and riding alone. Mason had left the starting point at approximately 8:00 a.m. and was not noticed missing until later in the early afternoon.

Officials said the support driver retraced the route and found Mason's body and bicycle.
