CHICO, Calif. - The Butte County Office of Education hosted an event offering free school resources to help combat child homelessness.

Staff said during the 2015-2016 school year, there were more than 1,400 homeless students in the county. Those students attended schools in 14 school districts. At least 700 of them went to school in Chico.

Tuesday, staff reached out to homeless students with a free event, offering back to school resources. K-12 students in attendance got free school supplies, backpacks, haircuts, shoes, food and even immunizations with public health that are required to enroll.

"It's amazing," said Program Coordinator Jessica Candela. "There's so much preparation that goes into these events, but to have these students feel so welcome, feel so prepared to be back to school ready and feel like they can succeed in school is just priceless."

Nearly 30 service providers attended the event. More than 60 volunteers helped to put it on. It was held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
