CORNING, Calif. - The Tehama County Sheriff's Office has identified the young man killed Friday night in an officer involved shooting in Corning.
Deputies said Angel Cresencio Corona Jr., 21, of Corning was shot and killed by a Tehama County Sheriff's deputy after attacking his father, Cresencio Angel Corona Sr., 57, of Corning, with a knife.
Deputies said they responded to 4740 Barham Avenue, space 42 in Corning around 6:09 Friday night after receiving a 911 call regarding a disturbance.
According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies were advised before getting on scene that the disturbance was being caused by Angel Corona Jr., who was known to the Sheriff's Office.
When deputies arrived on scene they saw the victim, Cresencio Corona Sr., was being attacked by the suspect, Angel Corona Jr. Angel Corona Jr. was standing over Cresencio Corona Sr., who was laying on the ground.
Deputies said Angel Corona Jr. was attacking Cresencio Corona Sr. with a knife in an attempt to cut his throat. Angel Corona Jr., has previously made threats that he was going to kill his father, Cresencio Corona Sr.
Deputies said when they attempted to intervene, Angel Corona Jr. did not respond to their commands to drop the knife and that is when a deputy shot him.
Deputies on scene immediately called for additional help, including medical, and began first aid on both individuals.
Deputies treated Cresencio Corona Sr. for lacerations to his face and neck area and he was then transported by ambulance to a local area hospital. Cresencio Coroner Sr. was taken immediately into surgery for his injuries, but has since been released.
According to deputies, Angel Corona Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene. His autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, April 14.
According to the Tehama County Sheriff's Office, they requested an independent investigation into this incident. The investigation is being conducted by the Tehama County District Attorney's Office and members of the Red Bluff Police Department.
Deputies say the two deputies that were involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
Tehama County Sheriff's Administration met with the investigative team today and they said they are pleased with the progress of the investigation. According to the Tehama County Sheriff's Office, the investigative team discovered surveillance video from the incident and they are confident the investigation should be complete by the end of this week.
Deputies said they have reached out to the family of the deceased and they have been cooperative throughout the investigation.
