Wanted felon found in possession of 4 grams of heroin afer foot chase

EUREKA, Calif. - The Humboldt County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) reported that a wanted felon is in custody after leading a deputy on a foot chase on Christmas Day.

According to the HCSO, at around 2 p.m. on Dec. 25 a deputy was patrolling near California and Hodgson Streets in Eureka when he saw wanted felon, 39-year-old Matthew Robert Painter walking down the road.

The HCSO said the deputy exited his vehicle and contacted Painter. Painter reportedly turned and ran down the street. The deputy then entered his vehicle and pursued the man on Hodgson Street until he ducked into a wooded area. The deputy then pursued Painter on foot for around 100 yards, the HCSO said.

The deputy reported that Painter eventually complied with requests to stop and was taken into custody without incident. While searching Painter, deputies said they located 4 grams of heroin in his pant pocket. Painter was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on a felony warrant, possession of heroin, resisting/obstructing a peace officer and violation of probation.
