Attempted bank robbery thwarted in Oroville

Oroville police reported on Monday that they successfully stopped an attempted robbery at Bank in the West in Oroville around 2:13 p.m.

Officers quickly responded to the bank after being dispatched regarding reports of a robbery in progress.

When police arrived, the suspect was still inside the bank about to make his exit. Before he could do so, an Oroville police officer held him at gunpoint and took him into custody.

The suspect was identified as Joshua Newens, 45, of Oroville. He allegedly demanded money and was saying he had a bomb. He was handed an undisclosed amount of money which was all successfully recovered, according to Oroville police.

Newens was booked into jail for robbery. His bail was set at $50,000.
