Local bikini barista franchise, Bottoms Up Espresso, set to open on Friday

Bottoms Up Espresso, the coffee shop franchise that showcases baristas wearing bikinis, is set to open in Chico on Friday at 5 a.m.

The owner of the franchise told KRCR News Channel 7 off-camera that the chain will begin serving customers Friday morning on the busy corner of Mangrove and East First Avenue in Chico.

This comes after the owner applied for a business license to operate the controversial coffee stand following the closure of the Java Detour that used to own the property. An employee at the Java Detour on Esplanade says they let go of all the employees that were working at the Mangrove location when corporate sold the property.

"We used to go over there a lot and get coffee and food but I don't know if I want to anymore because some people were saying it's a little grown up and I don't really want to go over there," said Jessica Elkins, a dancer at Hype Dance Studio next door. "I kind of just miss Java," continued Elkins referring to Java Detour.

The "sexy baristas", as the company Bottoms Up Espresso calls them on their website, wear bikinis and serve coffee to customers. And they're stirring up a lot of controversy in Chico.

Another way the company adds an extra kick to their coffee is the menu.

The new menus have been put up outside the stand since the business license was approved by the City of Chico. The menu features drinks named Sweet Cheeks, Blonde Bombshell and Tropical Kiss to name a few.

The franchise will also be selling merchandise at the coffee stand like calendars, hats, stickers and T-shirts.

The franchise opened its first location in Modesto, California in 2011.

Since then, they have opened six locations across central California. The location on Mangrove and East First Avenue will be the only bikini barista company at this time operating in the Chico/Redding area.

Residents say the outrage isn't about the taste of the coffee, but what is tasteful.

Anyone interested in applying to work at the Chico location can visit their website here and click on the 'careers' tab. The company asks that you upload a photo of yourself as a part of the application process.

The location on Mangrove and East First Avenue will be open Monday through Saturday, 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
