Woman hit and killed while helping stranded motorist

Update at 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 11:

A Butte County man was arrested after a deadly crash in which investigators said he crashed into three people who had stopped to help another driver on the side of the road.

The collision happened round 9:20 p.m. Wednesday on Lower Wyandotte Road near Foothill Boulevard just outside Oroville.

According to the California Highway Patrol, William Mandril, 63 of Bangor, was arrested for DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter.

Jessana Carmona, 33 of Oroville, had pulled on to the shoulder after having car troubles. Another driver and her passengers pulled over to help with the mechanical issue.

Officials said this was when Mandril crashed his F-150 pickup into the two cars and three of the four people, who were all outside their vehicles at the time.

Hillary Wilhite, 20, was taken to Oroville Hospital where she died from her injuries. Wheynema Sufin, 21, and Alyssa Gramps, 19, were taken to Enloe Medical Center in Chico with major injuries. Carmona was uninjured.

Mandril was found to be under the influence of a drug and was arrested. The crash is still under investigation.

The California Highway Patrol said one person has died after a crash near Oroville. According to officials, three vehicles crashed on Lower Wyandotte Road west of Foothill Boulevard around 9:21 p.m. Wednesday night.

Two people have been taken to the hospital with moderate to major injuries.

Roads were closed overnight but were reopened around 12:21 a.m. Thursday morning.
