Woman found dead after being hit by train

An adult female was found dead Saturday night after being hit by a train.

The Chico Police and Fire Dispatch received a report at 5:30 p.m. that a train had hit a pedestrian at the railroad crossing in the 1200 block of W. 8th Avenue.

Chico Police, Chico Fire, and Butte EMS Paramedics all responded to the area and located a deceased adult female near the railroad crossing. Witnesses at the scene said the adult female pedestrian was walking across the railroad crossing intersection and failed to notice the on-coming southbound train until the collision was unavoidable.

Sergeant Dane Gregory with CPD said the railroad crossing signals and grade crossing arms were activated and functioning at the time of the collision. The train attempted to make an emergency stop, but was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian.

The railroad crossings on East Avenue, W. Lindo Avenue, and W. 8th Avenue were closed to traffic for more than two hours due to the stopped train.
