Butte County Sheriff: search for human remains complete following Camp Fire

    UPDATE NOVEMBER 29, 2018:

    The number of unaccounted for individuals currently stands at 126.

    The number of accounted for individuals currently stands at 3,003.


    Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea announced search crews have completed their work looking for human remains in the Camp Fire burn scar area at a press conference in Chico Wednesday.

    This is a major step forward in the effort to reopen areas that remain evacuated. The sheriff did warn those plans could change if weather conditions create additional safety concerns.

    The number of people killed in the fire remains at 88 and the sheriff said they have identified 35 of those remains.

    The remains of 6 people remain unidentified. The sheriff added the number of people unaccounted for stands at 196.

    It is possible that people will find remains once they are allowed back into the evacuation zone and the sheriff is urging them to call the sheriff's office if they find remains.

    Sheriff Honea did announce the names of five more people whose remains were identified in the Camp Fire.

    They are:

    • Dennis Hanko, 56, from Paradise
    • Donna Ware, 86, from Paradise
    • Julian Binstock, 88, from Paradise
    • John Sedwick, 82, from Magalia
    • Jennifer Hayes, 53, from Paradise
