Fire crews working to protect historic French Gulch as some residents remain in town

Air and ground fire crews continue to work in the French Gulch area to contain the raging Carr Fire.

Many of the buildings in the town of French Gulch, including the Hotel are still standing. Hotel owner Eric Jue credits that to the hard work of firefighters.

“They want to save every single home,” Jue said.

KRCR went with fire crews several miles up Trinity Mountain Road, where the fire fight remains very active.

Several helicopter air drops assisted the firefighters who were setting back burns along the road.

In the town of French Gulch, a few dozen residents remain despite evacuation orders.

“I think the past owners probably set up and fought fire to keep [French Gulch Hotel] around and it’s now my responsibility,” Jue said.

People in town Thursday told KRCR they are hopeful the fire will steer clear the town which has stood there for nearly two centuries.

“1849 my friend, that’s a lot of years, it’s not going anywhere,” Jue said.
