ICYMI: Cal Fire explains high-tech firefighting tool

The SimTable, Cal Fire's high-end firefighting training tool.

Cal Fire has been making use of the SimTable, a high-tech tool used to train cadets and gain a better understanding of where and how fires spread.

It works by projecting a realistic image on top of piles of carefully arranged sand.

The image then moves in accordance with the spread of a wildfire, flood, or other scenario.

Gabe Lauderdale, Public Information Officer for Cal Fire, explained how the tool works.

"We use it to simulate fires and discuss strategies on extinguishing them. And in some cases, we bring them out to large fires and look at how we can kind of expect the fire to behave," Lauderdale said.

The imagery projected onto the table is gathered from data, collected on the areas currently affected by natural disaster.
