PARADISE, Calif. — After the Camp Fire, the Town of Paradise is hoping to rebuild its sewer system and they need the City of Chico's help to make that dream a reality.
Representatives from both communities met on September 11 to continue discussing the project and they are getting closer to drafting up an agreement.
Currently, the town operates solely on septic systems.
The idea is to transfer the wastewater from Paradise to Chico through a single underground pipe.
It will then combine with Chico's wastewater at the Water Pollution Control Plant.
In Paradise, the sewer project would only impact the town's commercial core, the areas encompassed by Clark Road, Skyway, and Pearson Road.
Vice Mayor for the Town of Paradise, Jody Jones, who is also a member of the committee dedicated to the sewer project says this project is a critical element to recover from the Camp Fire.
Operating on septic systems she says is restrictive to the business community.
"It’s a project we were pursuing before the fire but it’s even more important. We’ve heard from so many businesses that might want to come to Paradise but they’d really like to see that sewer. It’s very difficult for commercial establishments to operate on septic systems especially restaurants or anything that uses intensive water."
Jones says Paradise is the largest municipality west of the Mississippi that relies solely on septic.
The next meeting to further discuss the Paradise Sewer Project will take place in November.
