REDDING, Calif. — A non- profit agency, "Pathways to Housing," just acquired a building on Kenyon Drive last week. It will be renovated to house 15 medically fragile people, 10 men and five women determined to be too sick to be on their own but not sick enough to be hospitalized.
Homeless who are discharged to the street often get sicker.. and end up back in the hospital.
"This is a way to make a change with that. People can come here for a month or two and heal up, you know, their wounds, and inside as well, and we can work with them and give them a safe place to be with good meals and work with them towards finding some solutions for their issues and the homelessness they've experienced."
Dignity Health and the Shasta County Health and Human Services Agency are providing the money to operate the program for a two year trial period.
Shasta Community Health Center will provide case management to determine the person's needs and connect them with resources and a nurse for medical care.
"for example, there could be patients who have wounds that need to be taken care of or other medical needs that they couldn't take care of themselves, but you or I would be able to take care of with the help of a family member. We're going to be that family member. We're going to be that individual who's helping them heal."
After an estimated four to six week stay at pathways to housing.. someone ready to move would get connected with another redding non-profit.. access home.. for more permanent housing.
A plan to locate four homes in Shasta County is still in the works.
The renovation should start soon on the one- time church.
"Pathways to Housing" should be ready to go by late summer or fall.
