REDDING, Calif. — So what exactly is the job of a poll worker? Poll workers have several jobs during the election process.
These jobs include working the polls during elections at the Shasta County Clerk's Office as well as at precincts.
Poll workers also help get voters signed in, hand out ballots and answer any questions voters have. And, if you are lost or are at the wrong voting place, they will be the ones to direct you to your right place to vote.
Although poll workers may sound similar to election observers, they are not the same. There is a program required by law for election observers to understand the standards of conduct for elections.
Election observers can also choose not to do this program and are able to observe at any time before the election or the day of, either in the Shasta County Clerk's Office or at precincts.
Good news for those of you with a criminal record as well, as the Shasta County Clerk and Registrar of Voters, Cathy Darling Allen, says you can still run for office and vote.
A lot of people are under the misconception that if you have ever been convicted of a felony, that that means you can’t vote. And, that’s not true in California--it’s not true in many states, actually. But, it is true in some states, so that's why many people think that," Darling Allen said. "Having a criminal record does not prevent you from being a voter. And being a voter, and living in the district, are two of the primary qualifications to run for the offices you are talking about.
Darling Allen said there are specific crimes you have to be convicted of in order to disqualify you from holding office. She also stressed the need for poll workers for this upcoming Nov. 8 election—specifically young people.
You can make an easy $100, so why not sign up to be a poll worker? It's easy to do on their website, check out: https://www.elections.co.shasta.ca.us/volunteer/
