REDDING. Calif. — Wednesday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., all Jersey Mike's Sub Restaurants are donating 100% of their proceeds to a local nonprofit of that locations choice. Redding's Jersey Mike's Subs on Browning Street has chosen the nonprofit, Carrying Heroes.
Kelsi Halverson, the director and founder of nonprofit Carrying Heroes, said Wednesday is when her nonprofit is being highlighted in the Redding community. Jersey Mike's Subs Partner, Owner and Operator Sara Mills told KRCR why this is so important, “Jersey Mike's, nationwide, is donating 100% of sales to charities of their choice. Our choice is Carrying Heroes. It's a brand new charity so we just wanted to start it off on a good foot.”
Carrying Heroes is a Redding nonprofit that rescues horses from dangerous, abusive or neglecting homes and brings them to safety. Not only do they save the horses, but Carrying Heroes also provides them to veterans, first responders and other active duty members of the community as a therapeutic and healing experience.
“Part of Carrying Heroes is really just carrying people through their harder days through these darker times until they are through the other side,” Halverson told KRCR.
Carrying Heroes has helped over 50 veterans and other emergency workers within the community while also connecting them with a horse who has been through similar trauma.
“You just see this unspoken connection with someone who comes out with someone who has PTSD and they are face-to-face with a horse who has had that in their past and might even still struggle with that. They is just something unspoken that a human might not even be able to help that human but the horse does and the horse understands," Halverson added.
Jersey Mike's day of giving provides Carrying Heroes with 100% of the money made Wednesday.
Halverson added, "when you just buy a sandwich today its a really big impact!”
