A McCloud man was arrested on Friday on charges of murdering his four-month-old child by blunt-force trauma, according to the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Office (SCSO).

The arrest stemmed from an incident on November 27 when the McCloud man, Joshua Proffitt age 27 brought his child in to the local hospital for an alleged illness.

The child died at the hospital, and there were no initial signs of a crime-related death, according to SCSO.

Friday, an autopsy of the child detected trauma that would not be explained by an illness, and the SCSO Chief Deputy Coroner and Major Crime Unit Detectives established enough evidence to pursue the death of the child as a homicide.

Proffitt was later arrested in his McCloud home and booked into the Siskiyou County Jail on murder charges. Proffitt will be arraigned next week.

“The SCSO’s MCU detectives, criminal pathologist, initial responding SCSO deputy, and Chief Deputy Coroner worked diligently to reasonably determine the cause and manner of death in this case and resolve what appeared to be a suspicious death. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the infant victim and all others impacted by this tragedy. This case is still under investigation and anyone with information about this crime is urged to contact the SCSO’s 24-hour Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900,” said Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon Lopey.
