Major development in downtown Redding on Thursday with the announcement of the Redding Market Center Public Market.

"We've very excited because we've been working for the last year to roll out, what we think, is right for the community," K2 Development Companies CEO Allen Knott told KRCR on Thursday. "A public market is the right mix of ingredients: it has a combination of community-gathering-spaces that people can hang out at large, it has a mix of artisans—true masters of their craft—where they're purveying product right in front of you; they're delivering and making product. And, the next piece of it, which is unique to a public market, is they have a merchant experience—the ability to actually take either some of the ingredients home, or some of the items home, and then be able to deliver them to your outdoor barbecue or family for an evening event or a weekend event or group event."

Knott says is right for the community is the Public Market on Market Street. Built in 2020, in the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic, business space was largely vacant. So, they've pivoted to food and drink under a public market concept, successful in large cities like San Francisco and Seattle.

The first three tenants were announced: craft bakery "Tarsus" and Fall River Brewing Company that want to be a part of the new food and gathering space downtown.

"You could grab a beer, from us, you could wander in to the different food purveyors and maybe find one that you want to eat at," Fall River Brewing Company CEO John Hutchings told KRCR on Thursday. "You could, actually, hang out in the public area and just mingle with everybody that's here wandering the market and just enjoy your beverages, or enjoy what you're eating, at the same time. And so, it offers just a different experience of being able to enjoy all those at once," Knott explained.

And the Bantam Kitchen will open a second Redding location, here, as part of a growing downtown synergy.

"Truth be told, when we found out that Fall River [Brewing Company] was going to be here, selling beer, we said, 'we're in,'" said Kate Wood, an owner of The Bantam Kitchen. "Because we, as a family, we go to Fall River all the time, we take our kids to the brewery all the time. And so, to be doing something collaborative, with them; to be in a space with other purveyors, other local business owners, to be part of that community, we're just really excited for that."

The public market is planned to open in next summer, 2024.
