Following a string of car break-ins and car thefts, the City of Oroville and the Oroville Police Department say they will be testing a new artificial intelligence surveillance system for the next two weeks.

The LiveView Rapidly Deployed Surveillance Trailer was installed Monday behind the Oroville Inn, which serves as student housing for the Northwest Lineman College. According to Oroville mayor David Pittman, the parking lot behind the inn has seen about seven auto thefts recently.

"We had a number of vehicles stolen, especially Kias and the Hyundais, and that’s been a big problem. So, hopefully, we’re going to improve the security of downtown Oroville," Pittman told KRCR.

The AI technology will offer 24/7 monitoring of the area and will notify police if it detects suspicious activity.

"It will send our staff a message that will in turn view the image or the activity and then deploy appropriate resources if necessary," said Oroville Police Lt. Gil Zarate.

Zarate also says the unit features two-way communication so staff can hear people at the scene and communicate back to them.

Pittman says they'll likely discuss the purchase of one or more units at an upcoming city council meeting next month.
