Rowell Family Empowerment hosted their 9th annual Airports for Autism event, Saturday morning at Benton Airpark in Redding.
REDDING. Calif. — Rowell Family Empowerment hosted their 9th annual Airports for Autism event early on Saturday morning at the Benton Airpark in Redding.
Saturday's 5k aimed to share resources with the community and give those with autism or other disabilities an event to participate in. “We collaborated with the Redding Airport to shut down the runway for a couple of hours,” said Rowell Family Empowerment Program Director, Elena Bramble.
It's not just closed for the run either. Rowell Family Empowerment Community Navigator McKenzie Oakes says this event offers so much more: “It's really exciting because we can get all these vendors out here to help support. We got good music, we got good food, all of these vendors and now all of our community is here to run."
Rowell Family Empowerment said they had over 180 people sign up to participate in Saturday's Walk or Run 5k.
Rowell Family Empowerment Vendor Program Manager Sarah Motta told KRCR, how “Redding is such a tight knit community. The community is involved and they did come out and I think that we are just consistent in bringing awareness within the community.”
Regardless of the 5k winner, Airports for Autism had a bigger message to send. “It's important to be a friend, be an ally, and be an advocate for those who are underserved that have less of a voice in our community and to just be a friend to all,” Oakes said.
