New coach and a new approach at Simpson University, where a new men's basketball coach was introduced to students and the community on Monday afternoon.

Previously an assistant coach at Biola University, a.k.a. the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, David Cone grew up in Paso Robles, Calif., on the central coast, and says he's comfortable in smaller communities like Redding.

He inherits a team recruited by the former coach, Todd Franklin, who KRCR was told "resigned."

Cone's first order of business: getting to know the players.

“It’s been great to connect with them. And, that’s sort of the baseline is the relational part of it. I wanted to get to know them and know where they’re at; know if they want to be back here. And, so far, it seems like everyone is excited about me,” Cone said. “It seems like people are ready to come back. And I’m just looking forward to building those relationships, right now, so that when the fall comes, after everybody comes back from the summer, then we can really dive into the work that it’s going to take to be successful on the court.”

Cone, no relation to the former Major League Pitcher David Cone, says he wants to get to Redding as soon as he can. He, his wife and two sons have already been looking at homes.
