REDDING, Calif. — A 14-year-old student at Enterprise High School was arrested on Friday morning after being found with a loaded firearm on campus, the Redding Police Department (RPD) said.
On Nov. 8, at approximately 8:45 a.m., school staff were investigating the student for possibly possessing tobacco products when a loaded 9mm handgun fell from his waistband, authorities said. The staff immediately detained the student and contacted the School Resource Officers (SRO) from the Redding Police Department.
The RPD said the student was arrested for carrying a loaded firearm in public, possessing a firearm on a school campus and being a minor in possession of a concealed weapon.
“We haven’t discovered any information that the juvenile intended to use the firearm, but the investigation is still underway,” Redding Police Department Lieutenant Jon Sheldon said. “There’s still a lot of steps that we’re taking in this investigation. And so, if we do discover that there is some sort of threat that exists, then we'll notify the public as soon as we have that information. But it is not looking like that is the case at this time."
Lieutenant Sheldon added, “We don’t see this a lot. So this was kind of a surprise. It’s pretty rare... The manner that this was discovered was also a pretty rare set of circumstances.”
Redding police told KRCR that school resources officers will be present for sporting events on the Enterprise campus on Nov. 8 to address student safety concerns.
