Children of veterans cast lines in memory of Frank Sawyer
REDDING, Calif. - The third annual Frank Sawyer Memorial Kid's Fishing Day for veterans and their families was held at Ross Ponds by the Active 20-30 Club of Redding Saturday.
The event focused on children of veterans and active duty members of our armed forces.
The kids learned about the local fish and their habitats, how to tie a fishing knot, how to bait a hook, how to cast, and had the opportunity to make some fish art work.
All of the fishing poles, tackle, and materials needed were provided by the club.
Frank's widow was there, glad to see her late husband's legacy continue.
"It means a lot to me. I'm just thinking that Frank would be very proud of the kids coming out," Donna Sawyer said.
"Today's been good, I had fun fishing and I did a bunch of stations," 6-year-old Mateus Andrade said.
Frank served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, and was a long-time member of the Anderson Rotary and Active 20-30 Club when they moved to Redding.
The club said 52 kids registered, and enjoyed a nice lunch after fishing.
