K-9 Njord helps arrest suspected truck thief

Redding K-9 Njord helped take down a suspected carjacker on February 3, according to the Redding Police Department (RPD).

Officer McGinnis with RPD was conducting patrol checks in the area of Ellis Street and Polk Street. He heard banging noises coming from the Sonsrays Machinery yard.

He saw a man inside the fenced yard in the cab of a running pickup so he called for additional units.

McGinnis said it appeared the subject was in the process of trying to steal the truck. The subject noticed officers in the area and tried to run and climb on to the roof of a nearby business. Officials said he refused officer’s commands to surrender.

Officers used the U.A.V. (unmanned aerial vehicle) to check the roof. It was determined that the suspect was potentially hiding inside another fenced yard to the south of the original business.

K9 Njord ultimately helped officers locate 48-year-old Ryan Barrett, of Redding.

Officers said Barrett violently resisted arrest and was eventually taken into custody. It was determined that Barrett had illegally entered three separate business yards. The vehicle that Barrett was originally seen in had the door locks and ignition punched. No one else was believed to be involved.

After a medical clearance at a local hospital, Barrett was booked into the Shasta County jail for attempted vehicle theft, prowling, vandalism, and resisting arrest.
