Man arrested and charged in fatal December 2017 crash
REDDING, Calif. —
The driver of a vehicle in a fatal crash in December was arrested by police on multiple charges Friday.
Redding Police arrested Alexander James Kirby, 27, of Anderson, and charged him with gross manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing injury.
On December 15, 2017, Kirby's vehicle crashed into a telephone pole on Balls Ferry Road, killing his passenger, 22-year-old Sean Binder. Originally arrested, he was released pending further investigation, though the Shasta County District Attorney's Office told KRCR at the time charges were not dropped and the investigation continued.
In March the DA's office issued a felony warrant for Kirby's arrest. The RPD Neighborhood Police Unit launched a surveillance operation at an address frequented by Kirby, and at approximately 4:05 p.m. Friday officers observed Kirby smoking outside the apartment. He attempted to flee from police, but was subdued after a struggle, according to RPD.
Kirby was booked into Shasta County Jail for the felony warrant and an additional charge of delaying and obstructing an officer.
