Shasta County Sheriff's Deputies performed a welfare check on 63-year-old Karl Vorreiter at his Pine Street home after a friend said he was possibly suicidal. Instead, they found a woman whom they pronounced dead at the home.
Vorreiter was arrested on murder charges and booked into the Shasta County jail. He has no previous criminal history in Shasta County however, he has some past charges from Sonoma County including charges in 1993 and 1998 of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse.
Neighbors on Pine Street said they've heard loud yelling and arguing coming from the house in the past. Some said they were devastated and shocked by the news. Other neighbors said they weren't surprised, stating both Vorreiter and the woman who lived in the home had issues. One neighbor said she "looked like she had a hard life."
