Redding man injured after falling out of boat and being hit by propeller
SHASTA LAKE, Calif. —
A Redding man was injured Wednesday after he fell out of his boat on Shasta Lake and was hit by the propeller.
According to the Shasta County Sheriff's Office Boating Safety Unit, deputies received a call around 11:49 a.m. for a man who was struck by a propeller near Jones Valley Marina.
Boating safety personnel responded to the Jones Valley Marina and found that medical personnel was already on scene and were caring for the injured man, identified as Benjamin Duncan, 40, from Redding.
Deputies said they learned Duncan and his passenger, Marcy Bertolucci, were traveling out of the Jones Valley Inlet in a small aluminum fishing boat with an outboard motor on it.
Officials said there were numerous boats traveling in the area and the water was choppy from all the boat traffic.
Duncan and Bertolucci hit a group of waves which caused Duncan's boat to veer left and eject both of them into the water.
Officials said Duncan was then struck by the boat's propeller.
Neither Duncan or Bertolucci were wearing life jackets and officials say there were no required life jackets in the boat.
Duncan and Bertolucci were able to get back into the boat and then another boat towed them back to Jones Valley Marina for medical assistance.
Deputies said they learned Duncan consumed alcohol prior to the accident but said it does not appear to have been a factor.
