A small plane crash landed at Benton Airpark after experiencing mechanical problems Friday afternoon.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the pilot contacted CHP after his landing gear wouldn't come down in the front of the plane.

The CHP verified that the landing gear was not down and contacted the Redding Fire Department to stage.

The pilot executed an "axle landing" where he landed on his back wheels before tipping forward and having the nose of the plane skid across the runway. The landing was described as "almost textbook" when dealing with a situation like this.

Two people were on board, both were uninjured. CHP said the pilot is the owner of the Benton Air Center and was coming back from Sacramento.
