Argument over cigarettes lands suspect in jail

MANTON, Calif. - Deputies arrested a man who allegedly got into an argument with one man and hit the vehicle of another who came to help the first victim.

It happened around 6 p.m. Sunday at the Manton Trailer Park in Manton. Deputies said the incident stemmed from a dispute between neighbors over stealing cigarettes.

The victim reported being hit in the head with a bottle by Jeremy Maurer, 36, of Manton, according to deputies.

They said another man came to help the first victim and Maurer tried to drive away. That second man tried to stop the suspect and Maurer allegedly hit his vehicle, causing him to spin out.

Officials said Maurer then called the Tehama County Sheriff's Office, asking to speak with a deputy. They said when deputies got there and spoke with him, his story didn't line up with witness statements.

Maurer was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and hit-and-run.
