RED BLUFF, Calif. — A Gerber man, identified as Julio Amador, 24, was killed Friday night in a head-on collision on Highway 99W just north of Westover Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officials said at about 9:05 p.m., a 2005 Mazda 3 was being driven southbound on Highway 99W by Sandra Macedo, 19, from Corning, at an unknown speed.
A 2017 Honda Accord was being driven northbound on Highway 99W by Luis Garcia, 21, from Red Bluff, at an unknown speed.
For reasons still under investigation, officials say Macedo turned abruptly from the southbound lane, crossing into the northbound lane, directly into the path of Garcia.
The front of Garcia's vehicle collided with the right side of Macedo's vehicle, causing major damage to both vehicles.
Officials said after the crash, both of the vehicles stopped on the east shoulder of Highway 99W and all the people involved were trapped inside both vehicles.
People passing the crash stopped and attempted to help all the people trapped inside the vehicles.
Once CHP arrived on scene, both juvenile passengers in Macedo's vehicle, two girls ages 1 and 2, were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treatment of their injuries.
The man in the passengers seat of Macedo's vehicle, identified as Amador, was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital where he died from his injuries.
Both juveniles were later transported by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center for their major injuries.
Macedo and Garcia were both transported to Mercy Medical Center for treatment.
